Chapter 6

“What do you mean we’re not cleared for active duty?”

Gara fought to hold his temper in check. He had assumed the white-coats would at least maintain some semblance of normalcy. This sudden change was more than odd -- it was positively suspicious.

“We understand you have patrols, High Lord Chancellor,” Takada implored, staring at the growling tora, who was angrily lashing his tail back and forth in his office. “We must ensure that the Ryuu Major is fit for duty.”

“He is as well as he should be, doctor, and the enemy waits for no one. Or have you all forgotten the devastation of the Phoenix Strand?”

Gara could smell the man’s duplicity. It set his teeth on edge.

“I recall what those fire bugs are capable of doing.” Takeda shuddered. “But with the anomalies in his blood work…”

“What anomalies, doctor?” Gara asked, leaning forward. “If there is something wrong with my mate, then I am entitled to know.” He arched his eyebrow, wondering if this white-coat would be honest with him, or if he was, like the others -- despite his good family name -- a liar.

“Nothing serious,” the doctor was quick to assure him. “But puzzling, nevertheless.”

“Humph.” Gara snorted. It seemed it was a dark day for the name Takeda.

“And we would like to have a sample from you, as well, High Lord Chancellor, just to rule out you as the source of the anomaly --”

“I don’t think so.” Gara cut the doctor off, glad he had destroyed those cloths the other white-coat had used to swab his wounds. He wanted nothing of his left in the hands of these traitors. “I believe you have taken enough liberties with both me and my Wing Pair, doctor.”

“Oh,” Takeda was quick to assure, “That was just a small misunderstanding between Giraldi and the Ryuu Major.” Takeda smiled in what he hoped was a reassuring manner.

“Wanting to see my mate naked?” Gara leaned over the desk, his bright red hair standing on end, his eyes spitting the fire that dwelled within his soul. “To ignore the very rules that govern my society?” His tail lashed from side to side, and Takeda swallowed, a bit of fear telling in his scent.

“Giraldi is new,” Takeda explained, steepling his hands on his desk and doing his best to look concerned. “He knows better now.”

“Then you see to it that he remains in his place, doctor, else I may have to permanently remove an eye to show him the seriousness of the situation,” Gara growled. “If that is all, then my mate and I should be cleared for release. I have plans and a working strategy, doctor. You impede my protection of your planet by keeping me here.”

“Your men…” Takeda paused at the word before he continued. “Your warriors can go on without you, my Lord. You have a very impressive Second Wing whom I am sure is competent to take your place in battle.”

“Yet it is not his responsibility to do so, doctor.”

“Just one more day,” the doctor urged.
